Password aging field descriptions

The following table describes the password aging options in the Edit Local Administration Account window:

Field
Description
Password Expiration
Select Enabled or Disabled. If the Password Expiration field is set to Enabled, in the days field, type the number of days a password can be in place before the user is forced to change it. The default value for the Password Expiration field is Enabled. The range for the days field is 1 through 99999. The default value for the days field is 168.
Minimum Age Before Changes

Select Enabled or Disabled. If the Minimum Age Before Changes field is set to Enabled, in the days field, type the number of days before the password can be changed.

If the Minimum Age Before Changes field is set to Enabled, the password cannot be changed until the value specified in the days field has elapsed. For example, if you enter a 5 in the days field, a newly changed password cannot be changed again for 5 days. Setting the Minimum Age Before Changes field to Enabled and specifying a few days (or more) prevents users from changing a password and then immediately changing it back to the original password.

If the Minimum Age Before Changes field is set to Disabled, the password can be changed as frequently as desired.

The default value for the Minimum Age Before Changes field is Disabled. The range for the Minimum Age Before Changes, days field is 1 through 999. The value you specify for the Minimum Age Before Changes, days field must be less than or equal to the value specified for the Password Expiration, days field.

Expiration Warning

Select Enabled or Disabled. If the Expiration Warning field is set to Enabled, in the days field, specify the number of days prior to password expiration that the expiration warning begins to display.

If the Expiration Warning field is set to Enabled, at login a system message warns the user that his or her password is scheduled to expire. When this message begins to appear depends on the value entered in the Expiration Warning, days field. For example, if you enter 5 in the Expiration Warning, days field, the expiration warning message begins to appear five days before the password expires, and continues displaying until the password is changed.

If the Expiration Warning field is set to Disabled, no warning precedes the expiration of the password.

The default value for the Expiration Warning field is Enabled. The default value for the Expiration Warning, days field is 7. The range for the Expiration Warning, days field is 1 through 999. The value you specify for the Expiration Warning, days field must be less than or equal to the value specified for the Password Expiration, days field.
